Enteral nutrition is the provision of nutrients and fluids through the gastrointestinal tract. Enteral nutrition can be delivered through a nasogastric tube, a gastrostomy tube, or a jejunostomy tube.

  • Nasogastric tube is a thin, flexible tube that is inserted through the nose and into the stomach. Nasogastric tubes are often used for short-term ANH.
  • Gastrostomy tube is a tube that is inserted through the abdominal wall and into the stomach. Gastrostomy tubes are often used for long-term ANH.
  • Jejunostomy tube is a tube that is inserted through the abdominal wall and into the jejunum (the middle part of the small intestine). Jejunostomy tubes are often used for long-term ANH.

Parenteral nutrition is the provision of nutrients and fluids directly into a vein. Parenteral nutrition is used when a person is unable to tolerate enteral nutrition or when enteral nutrition is not possible.

Parenteral nutrition can be delivered through a central venous catheter or a peripheral venous catheter.

  • Central venous catheter is a long, thin tube that is inserted into a large vein in the chest. Central venous catheters are used for long-term parenteral nutrition.
  • Peripheral venous catheter is a short, thin tube that is inserted into a vein in the arm or hand. Peripheral venous catheters are used for short-term parenteral nutrition.

ANH can be a life-saving treatment for people who are unable to eat or drink enough on their own. ANH can also be used to prevent or treat malnutrition and dehydration.

If you are considering ANH for yourself or a loved one, it is important to talk to your doctor. Your doctor can help you decide if ANH is right for you and can help you choose the best method of ANH delivery.
